Published 5:33 am Tuesday, May 5, 2026 Central Oregon has had its share of viral sensations. The latest is a fast-growing but still tiny, fuzzy-headed eaglet named Phoenix . Phoenix, born at Smith Rock State Park earlier this year, has been captured on camera almost since the day it hatched. Online audiences have watched the eaglet chow down on freshly killed rabbit and fish, bob its head and wait for more food to arrive. Sam Vanderbeek, park manager at Smith Rock State Park, said both bald eagles and golden eagles nest within the park and are visible to visitors who come equipped with binoculars or spotting scopes. “Both are in areas that provide fairly accessible viewing opportunities, provided you have a good pair of binoculars or a spotting scope,” Vanderbeek said. The bald eagles have been returning to their nest for more than a decade and have successfully fledged at least one juvenile nearly every year they have been in the park, Vanderbeek said.…
