I would assume it’s mostly just the publicity of the fighter as a more recognizable face in most scenarios. Most viewers will recognize George Foreman or Roy Jones Jr over even the top trainers in the sport in most cases. But from a pure knowledgeable commentator standpoint, I would think a well-spoken and experienced trainer’s perspective would often trump that of a former fighter. I may be wrong on this, but I’d assume great trainers tend to have better knowledge of boxing strategy/tactics/theory/styles. Especially if they’ve trained lots of different fighters over their careers. No doubt there are lots of elite fighters that have seen everything there is to see in boxing and know it in their bones. But I’d think many fighters (especially the ones who are elite) are often just those special athletes that can just do stuff they can’t even explain the ‘why’ of. Some athletes are the type that understand the theory of what they’re doing.…
