Air Force’s Payton Zdroik will get an NFL shot, signing with the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday as an undrafted free agent.
A celebrated four-year starter, primarily at nose guard, Zdroik recorded 14 career sacks, ranking eighth in Air Force history. He wrapped his career with 29 tackles for loss.
Zdroik’s size – 6-foot, 275 pounds – was the primary obstacle when it came to projecting him as an interior defensive lineman in the NFL. He included fullback as a potential position at his NFL pro day and recorded reported numbers that included a 4.6-second 40-yard dash, 36-inch vertical leap and 31 repetitions of 225 pounds on the bench press.
A Brentwood, Calif., native, Zdroik’s parents (Daniel Zdroik and Kelly Fedel) were both Air Force graduates. His father played football for the Falcons, while his mother was a swimmer. Payton graduated from the academy in December.
