Published 12:30 pm Wednesday, April 29, 2026 If you are a regular reader of this column, you know as well as I do the last thing I want to write about in this space is current events. I don’t mean current events like the rest of GO, the tab in which the print version of Dropping In runs. GO’s bread and butter is features on upcoming concerts, gallery shows, seasonal festivals, restaurants, authors and what have you. I love writing about those things. No, I mean “current events” in the sense of real-world events our teachers wanted to discuss in civics class while I sat there blinking, remembering too late that I was supposed to bring in a newspaper. It’s true I’ve advocated for skateparks in this space, and written about efforts to get new ones off the ground, because I am a lifelong skateboarder and I know from using skateparks and listening to people smarter than myself what important community assets skateparks are. But you know what else are assets to communities? Public libraries.…
