The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to entertain All India Institute of Medical Sciences’ (AIIMS) curative petition against its direction to terminate a seven-month pregnancy of a 15-year-old girl, saying it “will not allow the institution to choose for the parents”. A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said it has to give priority to the choice of the girl’s family and advised the institute to explain the consequences of undergoing the procedure to the girl’s parents so that they can make an informed choice. “No, we will not allow the institution to choose for the parents. The parents will choose, the institution will enable the choice,” Justice Bagchi said.
