One of many byproducts of the U.S.’s paternalistic-turned-antagonistic treatment of its southern neighbor is that few in the U.S. are really aware of the rich, storied Cuban musical scene that continues to thrive. And it does so in many forms, via longtime émigrés from the island like Albita Rodríguez, more recent settlers in the U.S. like Cimafunk, and acts like Obsesión, who call Cuba their home. Cimafunk Inspired as much by the funk of James Brown as by African rhythms, EDM, and the music of his native Pinar del Río, Cimafunk got his start as a session arranger in Havana. After a stint with famed experimental musical collective Interactivo, he struck out on his own with 2017’s Terapia . His second album, El Alimento was nominated for a Grammy. Since then, Cimafunk has scored two more Grammy nominations: one for “Todo Colores,” a collaboration with Tank and the Bangas, and another for his 2024 album Pa’ Tu Cuerpa ( For Your Body ) .…
