Runners who become immersed in the marathon world may eventually hear about the world major marathons, also known as the Abbott World Marathon Majors (WMM). This series of races, which now include Berlin, Boston , Chicago, London, New York City, Tokyo, and Sydney receive a coveted six-star medal (introduced in 2016 when the series had six races). Although the Sydney Marathon made its debut in 2025 to the WMM lineup, the medal has six stars, and WMM has plans to introduce a nine-star medal when the organization adds potential races like Shanghai and Cape Town to the list.
