What was announced On 1 May 2026, UKRI (UK Research and Innovation) formally launched the Fundamental AI Research Laboratory — a six-year, up to £40 million programme sitting within EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council). The lab is chaired by Raia Hadsell, VP of Research at Google DeepMind and DSIT's AI Ambassador since November 2025. Unlike previous UK AI investments that focused on applied capabilities or specific sectors, this lab is explicitly about the underlying reliability of large language models and foundation systems.
