For clarification I do not use AI at all. I (25F) have been a journalist for nearly 5 years and I am notorious for my love of em dashes. Love em. Always have. And I know many people do not like them, but I do. I admit I am somewhat gratuitous with them, but I thought it was “me” and I’m a radio reporter so half of my writing isn’t actually visible to the public. ANYWAYS I have seen online recently that people see em dashes as a “sign of AI” and they immediately assume AI if they see too many em dashes or even just one em dash. Even though I think this isn’t the best way of detecting AI (the cookie cutter sentence structure is usually the giveaway for me), it has scared the shit out of me. I have almost entirely eliminated em dashes from my public-facing writing because I’m so scared people will think I used AI 😭 Farewell, my beloved em dash.
