Interview went great until references—now I’m second guessing everything I’m trying to figure out if I’m overthinking this or if something actually went wrong. I applied for a remote role and the process was moving pretty fast at first. I had to do 2 technical quizzes that took me about 2 full days, and they were really responsive and engaged. Then they asked for 5 references. After that, everything slowed down. A couple of my references told me they were contacted, and then I got a rejection. This is the email I received. But now I can’t stop thinking about the references. I left my previous job of over 10 years recently. When I left, I told most people it was for personal reasons because I didn’t want to cause issues with my boss.
