From hydration vests to commuter rucksacks, a running backpack can mean different things to different runners. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to run marathons to find one useful – they’re ideal for anyone carrying fuel, extra layers, or who wants hands-free hydration. As a former track athlete, run club leader, multiple half-marathoner, and regular run-commuter, I’ve tested plenty, both in the hunt for my own perfect pack and while guiding fellow runners to find theirs. It’s not the first thing you’ll need when starting out – a supportive pair of trainers should come first – but once you’re running regularly, it can be invaluable. You just need to be mindful that “the increase in load can slightly alter your mechanics, and will put additional stress through the muscles, joints and soft tissue,” says physiotherapist Ben Lombard.
