Councilor wants city to help fill potholes on hundreds of private ways in Boston

City Councilor Brian Worrell (Dorchester) thinks it's time people who live on private ways in Boston get the same level of pothole filling as residents who live along roads that are owned by the city. - although he'd still charge them something for the work. Worrell has proposed an ordinance under which Boston Public Works would be required to fill potholes on private ways with asphalt, just like they do on roads owned by the city - but only after property owners agree to pay half the cost. Unlike along public roads, property owners along private ways are responsible for their upkeep , even if they are open to the public. Worrell said there are hundreds of private ways in Boston, although most of them are fairly short roadlets. In introducing his proposal, Worrell said that private-way residents currently can ask Public Works to fill potholes, but that Public Works is currently limited to filling them with dirt, gravel or cinder, which can quickly wash away.…
