The morning that the latest challenge to mifepristone came about, I was seeing a patient who sobbed openly about how difficult the decision to end her pregnancy was. She was already a mother of three and a nurse working a demanding schedule. She felt that she could not provide the care that another child deserved, and yet she felt selfish about that decision — even as she recognized she made it with her family in mind. People experience complicated emotions, including a nagging sense of selfishness, about their decision to seek medical care to end a pregnancy. And the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal’s ruling to ban mail delivery of mifepristone only exacerbates the worry and guilt that plague people struggling with such a decision. Mifepristone is one of two medications given for a safe and effective medication abortion. Compared to carrying to term a pregnancy and giving birth, medication abortion is incredibly safe. People are almost 50 times more likely to die giving birth than they are getting an abortion.…
