A father and daughter living in New Jersey have pleaded guilty to running a counterfeit art scheme that slipped imitations of the likes of Andy Warhol , Banksy , Pablo Picasso , Richard Mayhew and other Native American artists into the market. The operation defrauded buyers of at least $2 million. Erwin Bankowski and his daughter Karoline Bankowska admitted in federal court in Brooklyn on April 28 to wire fraud conspiracy and misrepresenting Native American-produced goods. The pair face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison as well as at least $1.9 million in restitution. “For years, these defendants painted themselves as purveyors of fine art while selling lies on canvas,” Joseph Nocella , U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in a statement .…
