Google has been working on something called Project Toscana for a while. It’s a reported IR-based upgrade to Pixel 11 face unlock that testers said matched Apple’s Face ID speed and actually worked in low light. It was looking like the Pixel 11 would be its debut. According to a new leak, that’s not the plan anymore . Leaker Mystic Leaks posted on Telegram that Project Toscana likely won’t make it into the Pixel 11 this year because the feature isn’t ready. This comes after Android Authority reported in February that Google had run UX tests on working prototypes. Testers said it performed comparably to Face ID across different lighting conditions. Despite that progress, the hardware reportedly still needs more time. Google hasn’t officially acknowledged Project Toscana.
