What does PMOS mean? The new name for PCOS could change how condition is treated

A hormonal condition impacting one in eight women globally has been given a new name , aiming to significantly improve patient care. The condition, previously known as polycystic ovary syndrome , will now be referred to as polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome. Researchers and supporters of the change said the former name, often shortened to PCOS , is inaccurate. It oversimplified a complex hormonal or endocrine disorder to a misunderstanding about cysts and a focus on ovaries. This inaccuracy, according to the Endocrine Society, a global group of physicians and scientists, contributed to missed diagnoses and inadequate treatment . “The thought behind that is that one, there are no cysts in the ovary, so it’s very confusing,” said Dr Melanie Cree, one of the authors of the Lancet article and a pediatric endocrinology expert at the University of Colorado Anschutz.…
