Around 23 people from Portland’s Mazamas Mountaineering Center stood on a boardwalk at Smith Rock State Park Saturday morning, using shovels to scoop dirt and create space between the rock wall and the wood beams. Too much dirt contributes to the wood rotting, so their work helped park infrastructure last longer. All around the park, 29 other groups worked on projects to clean up and protect Smith Rock for the next generation of rock climbers, hikers and people who love the outdoors. It was all part of the park’s 34th annual Spring Thing cleanup event, with projects ranging from building staircases, cleaning up litter, replacing fence rails, working on the garden, pulling weeds and more.
