Captured Lightning. Lichtenberg Figure created in acrylic by electron beam from linear accelerator (Wojtek Plonka/shutterstock.com) This lightning compilation video captures what happens when the atmosphere turns volatile. A storm rolls in, looking routine, and then, suddenly, a tree is vaporized, a building is on fire, and the power goes out. It's a reminder of just how extreme lightning can be — and why taking cover matters. Inside a thundercloud, collisions between ice particles build up enormous electrical potential. When the electric field becomes strong enough, the air no longer acts like an insulator, and a conductive path forms. A downward leader from the cloud connects with an upward streamer from the ground, and lightning results when that connection completes. Tall, wet, or structurally conductive objects simply bias the odds. Watching these clips makes the standard safety advice feel less abstract — more like something you'd actually want to follow the next time thunder starts rolling in.…
