Firefighters were called to South Dunedin yesterday to secure a large glass canopy, which buckled in high winds about 4pm.

Gillions Funeral Services manager Sian Munro said a strong southerly blew through the garage of the building and picked up the glass canopy, which folded back against itself, landing on the roof.

A glass garage door was also smashed.

No-one was in the garage at the time.

Meanwhile, a large macrocarpa tree also fell across Harington Point Rd, near Otakou Golf Course, believed to be about 3.45pm.

The road was blocked for about 40 minutes while the Portobello Volunteer Fire Brigade cleared the road.
