Abby Shoemaker came close to qualifying for the 2028 Olympic Marathon Trials at the New York City Marathon in 2025.The time she needed: 2:37:00. Abby ran 2:37:47.In the city cheering her that day were her parents, Jon and Perry Shoemaker of Vienna, Virginia. And Perry Shoemaker knows a thing or two about qualifying for the Olympic Marathon Trials.That’s because she accomplished the feat in 2019—at age 48.Perry needed a 2:45 to qualify for the 2020 Trials in Atlanta, and she ran 2:43:33 at the Eugene Marathon, averaging a tad faster than 6:15 per mile. She became the second-oldest woman in the Atlanta field.Abby, now 26, the oldest of three Shoemaker daughters, all runners, was a sophomore at the University of Chicago at the time her mom qualified.
