In 2008, a 23-year-old teacher living in New York City named Hannah Upp disappeared after going for a run. Nearly three weeks later, she was rescued by a ferry captain after being spotted floating face-down in the New York Harbor. Though she survived, she had no memory of the previous 20 days. Doctors diagnosed her with dissociative fugue, a deeply unsettling and rare condition that causes people to completely lose their sense of identity and wander aimlessly without any awareness of who they are, often for long periods of time. In Hannah’s case, doctors believed intense emotional stress may have triggered her condition, though no single cause was definitively identified.…
