Inside the quiet unravelling of the world’s most optimised lifestyle. There is a cafe in Ubud that tells you everything you need to know if you’re paying attention. It is full every morning. Laptops on every table. Smoothie bowls half-eaten beside open browsers. A few pairs lean in over conversation, and a small group clusters around a shared screen at the back. But the dominant texture of the room is solitary. Most people are alone with their work, headphones on, eyes fixed on a screen, sharing a physical space without being in a common one. Step outside and the support infrastructure is immediately visible. Breathwork studios, yoga shalas, meditation classes, all advertised within walking distance. For the people in that cafe, these are not occasional indulgences. They are daily rituals. The schedule that gives structure to a life that has no externally imposed structure at all. The roads connecting all of it were dirt tracks along rice fields not long ago, since asphalted over but never widened.…
