Jobsite Accident I build utility poles for a living. We have to lift 50ft poles into a plasma drill. The method i was taught is pick one end up, wedge a 4x4 in the middle and readjust straps. Job has no official training, even crane training was “you say you have experience so you’re certified”. Recently a green hand was lifting a pole the way we were taught, it ended up slipping (which is a common hazard and has been brought up) and it severed his finger off. Management’s response was “instead of lifting from the small side, lift from the large side”. Everything else remains the same. I even asked my supervisor what risk this eliminated. “None” was his answer. This company seems big but has no knowledge of basic safety. Nobody knows what a JSA is, what an SOP is. They don’t know what ISO is. Its frustrating, a big part of me cares for my safety and the safety of others. I’ve been in the industry 10 years and have never been to a company like this.
