“This project marks a new era in my work,” Maxime Bousquet says, standing in front of a 16-foot window, framed by floor-to-ceiling velvet curtains. Indeed, surrealist design motifs abound throughout this top-floor jewel box, which is home to a collector couple and their many artworks. Cocteau, Picasso, and Sterling Ruby grace the apartment's walls. In the entrance hall, Viola’s video Bodies of Light plays next to a staircase that twists upwards like a ribbon. Bousquet, an AD100 France interior designer, wanted to highlight these works while not making them the sole focal point of the sprawling space. “They really live with their art—and didn’t want their apartment to feel like a museum,” explains Bousquet. In the bar area, a monk’s chair from the early 20th century and a pendant light by Pietro Chiesa from the 1930s. On the wall to the left hangs Friday the 13th , a 2009 work by Sterling Ruby (SM Fine Art Gallery). On the sideboard, Rouge de Lampe , a 2022 piece by Jessy Razafimandimby (Sans Titre Gallery).…
