I’m a long time speaker of Spanish (next month will mark 18 years) and my fiancée is Mexican and currently lives in Mexico. I asked for a little feedback on my accent since I don’t make grammatical mistakes and I’m my vocab is robust. She said I sounded like a European speaking Spanish which didn’t make a lick of sense to me because there are tons of languages in Europe. She went on to claim that when she was in college, there were a lot exchange students from all over Europe and that despite coming from all sorts of linguistic backgrounds, the advanced speakers ultimately sounded the same. This is not the first time I’ve heard of this concept from a Latino. How do both learners as well as natives of Spanish grapple with this? submitted by /u/anthony_getz [link] [comments]
