23 september 2000, kalmar prison Got up at half past six. Micha picked me up at eight. Then we drove to Kalmar, 450 kilometres – we only stopped once at a café outside Norrköping and then again in Småland to fill up the car. It was incredibly beautiful. But as soon as you stop and get out of the car you step into a foreign country and an incomprehensible language. Autumn is more serious further south. Micha was speeding, driving between 140 and 150 kilometres an hour, but it was a straight road and almost no traffic, just a German who passed us without seeing that a car in front was turning left, but Micha was able to brake in time. He drives a Volvo, a frighteningly fast car. He loves to drive fast. They only had bad Russian cars in Poland when he was young, and he always dreamt of owning a good car. We talked a lot, and didn’t prepare at all for the visit to Kalmar Prison. We got there by 12.30 p.m. and had lunch at a restaurant near the prison, built by a peaceful lake in 1853.…
