Pussy Riot flooded the grounds of the Russia Pavilion at the Venice Biennale this morning in a spectacular protest of the nation’s return to the major art event. Protesters waved Ukrainian flags as chants of “Disobey!” and “Blood is Russia’s art!” resounded through the Giardini. The punk feminist art collective has been a vocal critic of Russia’s planned comeback to the Biennale after a four-year hiatus following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Donning their trademark pink balaclavas and gothic dress, around 15 members of the all-woman group announced their presence at 11 a.m. sharp when gushes of of pink smoke filled the air above the stately, green pavilion. A crowd quickly formed around the group as onlookers cheered and raised fists in support of the cause.
