My wife let me know at 5pm on a Friday that she got an email from her previous employer that they would be sending her a check 6/1 for her 401k there. She hasn’t set up a 401k at her new employer and obviously it being the weekend it’s not really possible to get it lined out for a regular rollover by Monday. This would have been the ideal option. She has a good chunk of money in the account and funding the 20% taxes out of pocket and then waiting until next year to recoup it is not ideal. Is our best bet to make a Roth IRA this weekend and request the funds be transferred there before they send the check Monday? I saw we can do one via Schwab online relatively easily. Are there other better options? Are there things I’m missing? Edit: I would assume they are making it out to her as we do not have another account to transfer to at the moment. So I am unclear if they will withhold the 20% in taxes since it is going to her or will be the full thing since she didn’t request this. Edit2: appreciate the responses.…
