Childress was picked third overall in the first round of the 1985 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. He played 12 years in the NFL, 11 with the Oilers, and played his final season with the Dallas Cowboys. He was honored with an induction to the Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame in 1990 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010.
