The performance combined live guitar, saxophone, MIDI controllers, loops, electronic drums, basslines, drones, FX and scene-based transitions. Ableton handled the structure of the set, the rhythmic layers, ambient textures and transitions, while the live instruments were performed on top of that framework. The set was built more like a continuous performance than a collection of separate songs, with each section moving into the next through gradual transitions, changes in density, tension/release and live layering. There was also a visual/body movement component: contemporary dancers were on stage, and interactive visuals were generated through motion tracking with an Xbox Kinect. Because of that, Ableton had to work not only as a music tool, but as the backbone for a full audiovisual performance.…
