Spirit Airlines ceases operations after 34 years amid financial struggles and high oil prices

Spirit Airlines has announced that it has gone out of business after the low-cost airline ran out of cash and a rescue attempt by the Trump administration appeared to stall. The airline that once operated hundreds of daily flights on its bright yellow planes and employed about 17,000 people said that after 34 years it had “started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately”. The airline said all flights had been cancelled and customer service was no longer available. “We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our guests for many years to come,” the announcement said. The company had struggled to make a deal with its creditors and secure funding to maintain operations, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing people familiar with the matter.…
