London's infrastructure concerns have deepened as Transport for London (TfL) imposed new weight restrictions on Vauxhall Bridge, banning vehicles over 18 tonnes. This decision follows a recent inspection revealing "some elements of the structure have deteriorated," prompting safety concerns in the heart of the capital. The move echoes similar measures taken across the city's vital river crossings. Just three months prior, Albert Bridge, less than two miles away, was closed to motor vehicles by Kensington and Chelsea Council after cracks were discovered. Hammersmith Bridge in west London has also faced an 18-tonne limit since April 2019 due to pedestal cracks. Buses and emergency vehicles are exempt from the new Vauxhall Bridge ban. TfL said Vauxhall Bridge carries an average of 39,500 vehicles per day, about 200 of which weigh more than 18 tonnes.
