Emblematic of 250 years of freedom in America, Francisco Sotomayor’s obsidian sculpture of a golden eagle will be on display this summer at the Lizzadro Museum in Oak Brook, Il. Carved from the inside of a piece of obsidian, Sotomayor’s Golden Eagle headlines the celebration at the museum, which is in a suburb of Chicago. “This is a special event for the summer to coincide with the anniversary of America,” said Sotomayor, who lives in Divide. “The gallery specializes in lapidary arts, the polishing and drying of stones to make jewels and sculptures.” Sotomayor, whose marble sculptures, Pas de Deux and American Woman, which he carved in 1999 and 2003, respectively, recently broadened his artistic reach to creating with obsidian and light.
