Know what the most-watched thing on television is? Football. Specifically, the National Football League. Of the top 50 most-watched television telecasts in 2025, 46 were NFL games — led by Super Bowl LIX (in February of 2025) that attracted 127.7 million viewers. Of the top 100 shows, 83 were NFL games. The NFL dominates Thanksgiving and Christmas and Super Bowl Sunday is practically a national holiday. All this is to say that the NFL is big business, and people can’t get enough of it. As a diehard baseball fan, it pains to say this, but it’s true: football has become America’s pastime and passion. The NFL takes full advantage of our obsession, selling the rights to televise their games to networks as well as, most recently, streaming services, for billions of dollars.
