Young Galaxies Grow Up Fast Image: A look at two different remote galaxies from the ALPINE-CRISTAL-JWST survey (DC-873321 and DC-842313). DC-873321 is a merging pair and DC-842313 is part of a system of three or four merging galaxies. The different panels (from left to right) show different wavelengths observed by JWST and ALMA, each seeing different aspects of the galaxy: stars (optical stellar light; JWST), hot ionized gas (optical hydrogen alpha; JWST), dust (radio; ALMA), and cold gas (traced by carbon emission; ALMA). The picture on the far left shows all wavelengths combined. DC-873321 is located 12.6 billion light-years away, or a redshift (z) of 5.15 in astronomical terms. DC-842313 is located 12.4 billion light-years away, or a redshift (z) of 4.55. Credit: Robert Hurt (Caltech), Andreas Faisst (Caltech) and the ALPINE-CRISTAL-JWST Survey team .…
