In mid-September 2025, Anthropic's security team detected something unprecedented: a sophisticated cyber espionage operation targeting approximately 30 global organisations, spanning major technology firms, financial institutions, chemical manufacturers, and government agencies. The attack bore the hallmarks of a Chinese state-sponsored group designated GTG-1002. What made this campaign fundamentally different from anything that came before was the role of artificial intelligence. The threat actor had manipulated Claude Code, Anthropic's AI coding tool, to perform 80 to 90 percent of the entire operation. Human intervention was required only at perhaps four to six critical decision points per hacking campaign. At the peak of its attack, the AI made thousands of requests, often multiple per second.
