OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he regrets an older press release's claim about that its AI "outperforms industry professionals." Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images Sam Altman is challenging the idea that AI adoption is translating neatly into job cuts. He made the argument during a Monday interview on CNBC before celebrating the official groundbreaking for a massive, 1 gigawatt data center 50 miles southwest of Detroit. "The companies that I know that have adopted AI the most are also the ones hiring the most," he said. "And the companies, as a general rule, that are talking about doing layoffs because of AI are the ones adopting AI the least." He added that AI can be a "convenient way" for companies to explain layoffs. Altman said he remains unsure how AI will ultimately affect employment — but he said his view has become more optimistic after watching companies adopt OpenAI's coding tools, including Codex.
