West 1st Street could soon be buzzing after official approval of new restaurant/entertainment complex

The Boston Licensing Board yesterday approved plans by the owner of the South End's Beehive to convert three former industrial buildings along West 1st Street in South Boston into a restaurant and entertainment venue to be called King Bee. The Zoning Board of Appeal approved the plans last year to turn the former home of a handicap-ramp manufacturer into a new hangout featuring "fun and inventive cooking and cocktails, and laid back, hip spaces to hang and nosh and drink" that will be "quintessentially Southie and timely but one that is built to endure and cherish." The licensing board formally approved plans by Beehive's Jack Bardy to pay $400,000 for the liquor license of Mission Hill's Squealing Pig, shut by a fire in 2024,  to stock a series of rooms and bars and the entertainment space. At a hearing on Wednesday, Beehive attorney Joe Hanley said King Bee will be based on the same basic vibe as Beehive, aimed at "a more mature audience" than the bars along Broadway.…
