Fireworks are a fun, worthy way to celebrate July 4. And Macy’s is still doing those in New York City this summer, so nobody’s shirking on the fireworks. But for America’s 250th birthday, New York Harbor is also recruiting a proud armada of very tall sailing ships for the latest edition of OpSail . Many of these schooners have made the trip here before. OpSail, or Operation Sail, was greenlit by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 as a way to celebrate American milestone years. The recurring event rallies many of the world’s remaining tall ships across uncertain seas—from Peru, the Netherlands , and even India (the latter's vessel is already en route). Operating this year as Sail4th 250 , OpSail has seen a steady increase in enthusiasm over time. This July’s flotilla stands to be the largest in maritime history.
