That model is breaking in public, and small business owners are among the last to notice. A Pew Research Center study of real browsing behavior found that when a Google search produces an AI summary, users click through to a traditional result just 8% of the time, compared with 15% when no summary appears. In other words, the study shows that when Google shows AI-generated answers, people are far less likely to click through to websites and are increasingly getting the information they need directly from the search results instead of visiting your site. Similarweb data shows zero-click searches have jumped from 56% to 69% in about a year. The buyer may never visit your site at all.
