I’m thinking about getting back into Muay Thai after about 4 years of doing other sports (mostly biking, hiking, some gym work). I’m not interested in competing at all—just want to use it for fitness and staying lean.

Do you guys find that Muay Thai alone is enough to get in good shape, or is it better to mix it with some gym work?

From what I remember, classes already cover a lot—cardio, conditioning, core, etc.—but I’m wondering if I’d be missing out on strength if I drop the gym completely.

For context, I’m in my 40s and mainly focused on fat loss, general fitness, and staying injury-free long term.

Would you:

  • Just do Muay Thai a few times a week, or
  • Combine it with 1–2 strength sessions?

Curious what’s worked best for you.
