Dear Care and Feeding, A few months ago, my mother-in-law, “Irene,” offered to pay for my 6-year-old daughter, “Delia,” to take gymnastics. Money has been tight for our family since my husband’s work hours were reduced. I thought it was incredibly kind, and we accepted. Delia has been having a great time and already has made several friends. Then I learned why she’s really paying for the lessons. My husband was recently talking to Irene on speakerphone while we were in the car (she didn’t know I was there). I heard her tell him that Delia taking gymnastics “should keep her from getting fat like her mother.” My husband was embarrassed for me and quickly ended the call. I am outraged to learn my mother-in-law had such a cruel ulterior motive.…
