A man is due to appear in court on Monday after a standoff with police on the roof of a building in central Christchurch.

Police said officers responded to an incident on Durham St on Sunday where a person had potentially been interrupted in the middle of a break-in.

A 39-year-old man was arrested around 9.15pm following the standoff with police.

Footage taken by Chris Lynch Media showed a man on top of the central city building, swinging a large pole around with police lasers pointed at him.

The man is due to appear in Christchurch District Court on Monday on charges including burglary, resists police, assault, possesses offensive weapon, and threatens to kill/do grievous bodily harm.
