Cellist Peter Wiley remembers the photo he saw when he was 6 years old that led to his choice of instrument. His mother played piano, and his father was into big band music and played the trumpet, and his older brother had just started violin lessons. Hailing from a family of amateur musicians, “It was a natural for me to play an instrument, and I chose the cello out of a book, a picture book,” Wiley said. “I’m not sure if my mother was pointing me in the direction of the cello, but I definitely was told that it was known for its beautiful sound, but I was attracted to the picture,” in a children’s book of instruments. Lessons wouldn’t begin until the ripe old age of 7. “It probably took the better part of a year for them to find a quarter-size cello for me,” he said.…
