I used to think the Staff+ bar was mostly about system design, incident leadership, and convincing six teams to adopt your boring but correct abstraction. That bar is still there. But something shifted in the last year. The engineers who are actually moving the needle now spend a surprising amount of time directing, reviewing, and governing AI agents instead of writing every line themselves. I am not talking about "using Copilot."
