Payton was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Miami of Ohio from 1994-95, when McCullough was a star running back at the school. He later was Philadelphia’s quarterbacks coach in 1997, when McCullough had a brief stint with the Eagles. On April 25, the final day of the draft, Denver was eyeing McCullough’s son Dasan, an outside linebacker from Nebraska.
