My attempt to control all the elements in my life give me nothing but grief. I suddenly realized I was upset about the wind; not just annoyed, but really upset. It’s a consuming kind of anger. The flags whipped in the wind, and I found myself blaming the weather for a round I hadn’t even started. It’s odd to catch yourself feeling that way. Over the years, I’ve read Epictetus at least a dozen times — especially The Enchiridion, the short book. Stoics are big on lists, and his first one is key: some things are in your control, and some aren’t. You control your opinions, desires, choices, and responses. You don’t control your body, reputation, other people’s actions, the weather, or how things turn out. He’s clear about this. If you mix them up, you end up unsettled. He was right about feeling unsettled. But I keep forgetting this.…
