For the last few months it’s felt like the Labour party has been growing increasingly confirmed in two, antithetical beliefs: that, after this year’s local elections, it would be in urgent need of leadership; and that no one was in any place to offer it. It can’t be Rayner, because of lingering questions over her tax affairs. It can’t be Streeting, because the members can’t stand him. And it can’t be Burnham, because of the slight impediment of him being 200 miles away without a parliamentary seat. That seemed to be it for candidates anyone other than eternal optimist Al Carns (no, me neither) believed had a chance. Throw in the obvious risks of several months navelgazing at a moment of acute strategic and economic crisis, and the most likely result seemed to be impasse. Everyone knows we can’t go on like this; nobody knows how to stop us. The Labour party had become a scale model of the country as a whole.…
