Las Vegas Raiders general manager John Spytek insists the evaluation period that led to the selection of quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the top pick in the NFL draft was a thorough one that wasn’t finalized until fairly late in the process. Coach Klint Kubiak may have been an easier sell. “When we went to the pro day and we got to see Fernando throw live and the way he ran that pro day and boss his teammates around and tell them what route to run and how accurately he threw the ball,” Kubiak said of when he was convinced Mendoza would be the pick. “Then we took him upstairs and talked football with him and listened to him communicate the game and how well and quickly he picked things up. “I really liked how he played the game on film, but seeing him in person was really helpful. It allowed us to watch film on a lot of other guys because we knew we had the guy (at No. 1).” Still, they had to wait until Thursday to actually announce that decision to the world.
