Heavy Song of the Week is a feature on Heavy Consequence breaking down the top metal, punk, and hard rock tracks you need to hear every Friday. This week, we highlight the new single “Revenant” from Loathe. The nu-metal revival has been auspicious, largely for sorting through the sounds of a scene that was quite a bit rougher to live through than we sometimes see said these days and isolating those moments of pop distillation of otherwise avant-garde material. The genre’s early influence from post-hardcore, wild prog groups like Mr. Bungle, early death metal and urban and electronic music get refiltered, subtracting out the elements that felt at times almost parodies of their sources first time around to get to something that is not just emotionally compelling but aesthetically developed. This is a fancy way to say that Loathe’s new single “Revenant” doesn’t just satisfy on a headbanging end but an artistic one, as well.…
